WILLOW PLACE TOWNHOUSE

GARDEN LEVEL:  NEW FAMILY ROOM

Many challenges had to be overcome to create a pleasant new family room at this floor. Low ceiling heights, poor lighting and limited window area gave this front room a dark, claustrophobic feeling. Seeking to expand the dimensions of the room, it was decided to take advantage of height between the floor joists overhead. However, these rough-hewn floor joists were too irregular and rustic to remain exposed, so a new millwork "cladding" was designed to conceal and regularize their appearance.

The new built-in cabinetry and audio-visual center were detailed to reinstate and reinforce the traditional character of the house. These elements had to be carefully woven around the masonry piers that support the fireplaces above. A light maple floor and bright new finishes make the most of the limited daylight giving this space a remarkably light feeling for a garden level room.
